Over the last 5 years Lion Jaap de Jonge has cycled over 600 miles from his home in Solihull to each of the Multiple District Conventions – Manchester, Eastbourne, Blackpool, Basingstoke and Birmingham to raise hundreds of pounds for various good causes.
What is all the more amazing is that Jaap achieves this challenge on his father’s Dutch Betavus bike, which is 80 years old and doesn’t have any gears. Although the bike has needed many repairs over the years, its frame is original.
This year, Jaap will cycle around 140 miles, from his home town to the MD Convention on his father’s treasured bike, which was given to him at the age of 16. He is expecting to make the trip to Swansea in two days.

Jaap trains regularly before conventions, cycling around 50 miles on the build-up to each one. “Why do I do it? It’s fun, I love the countryside and cycling is a great way to enjoy it. Many of the routes take you along canals with only a minority along roads. Britain is really beautiful, wherever you cycle”.
This year Jaap is raising much needed funds for Papyrus, a national charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide among young people. Suicide is the largest killer of men and women under the age of 35 in the UK.
