Penrith Lions Club.
It is with sadness Penrith Lions wishes to announce the death of Ian Edgar on 2nd October 2019.
Ian joined Penrith Lions Club in July 1982. He involved himself in all of the club’s activities, serving as President (twice) and Zone chairman. His passion lay with the people of Penrith, the Eden Valley, and Cumbria becoming a figurehead in the club’s support for a number of local charities to help people with disabilities or coping with hardship and distress. Club secretary for over 11 years, Ian was knowledgeable in every aspect of Lionism, locally and nationally – the “go-to man” for answers, also the club’s webmaster and photographer. He was very much to the fore helping victims of the Cumbria floods, the last occasion being in 2015.
Isn’t this enough for one person? Not Ian! He was also prominent with Eden Talking Newspapers, a charity to help the blind and partially sighted. Set up in 1985 by Penrith Lions, a team of volunteer readers from various organisations record extracts from the local newspaper, the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald for the benefit of many listeners. Ian was recently honoured with the Melvyn Jones Fellowship for dedicated humanitarian service in recognition of 37 years of exemplary service. He was proud to be a member of Penrith Lions. Any regard the club has achieved is largely due to Ian’s leadership and his stalwart and sterling service.
He will be greatly missed by family, friends and club colleagues.
