Witney Lions Club.
It is with great sadness we have to report the passing of Lion Peter at the age of 73, after a 6 year brave fight against cancer. He had been a Lion for 34 years, and during that time he had been President twice, Chair of Fundraising, and for the majority of the other times was either a very active fundraising member or our Members Social “committee”.
When his hearing began to deteriorate Peter asked in 2012 for Privileged Lion status, as he felt he could not continue to contribute as much as he would like. Nothing was further from the truth! He continued to attend meetings regularly – until his deteriorating health meant he could not. He continued to be involved with our Annual Carnival – organising the rotas for our pig roast, was a very successful raffle organiser, and particularly good at suggesting new ways of raising the club’s profile and organising/designing leaflets and “pop up” banner contents.
Peter will be best remembered as the the Lion who set up and ran our Annual “Dream Scheme” (now in its 4th year) whereby local groups, clubs and organisations can apply for funding to complete small projects which help them, or allow them to help the local community. £3000 is allocated each year. Peter and his wife Sue assessed each application, and we have been able to help between 9 and 12 such groups each year.
Peter was a modest, caring person, always enthusiastic and hard working, thinking of others and of ways of trying to help them, and never taking himself too seriously. He was like this in his private life and as a Lion.
Witney Lions, and the local community, will be the poorer without his presence. At this sad time, our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Sue – who was his mirror image and supporter throughout his life.
