Key information

What is diabetes? Diabetes is a condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high.

According to the NHS website the two main types of diabetes are:

  • type 1 diabetes – where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
  • type 2 diabetes – where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body’s cells do not react to insulin

Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. In the UK, around 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2.

During pregnancy, some women have such high levels of blood glucose that their body is unable to produce enough insulin to absorb it all. This is known as gestational diabetes. To plan an event for expectant mothers, download the Project Planner

Lions Diabetes Video presentation

A Lions Diabetes video presentation is available to view and download in four separate sections – click here to watch: Lions Diabetes video

The video takes you through the following:

  • an introduction and the risks of diabetes
  • what is it like to live with the condition?
  • how to check online so you ‘Know your risk’ and to go about setting up and running a diabetes support group?
  • raise awareness within your community by organising an event and how to access diabetes grants from the Lions Clubs International Foundation

World Diabetes day is 14 November 2024
